Doulas

  What is a Birth/Labor Doula?

A doula is someone who provides continuous, experienced support during labor. doulas are educated in providing comfort measures, psychological and emotional support. They “mother” you, empower you, comfort you, educate you, encourage you, reassure you and make your birth a much more satisfying, safe experience.

What are the obstetrical benefits to using a doula service? Several important studies have shown that continuous labor support from a doula reduced the odds of receiving analgesia by 31 percent, decreased the use of oxytocin to stimulate labor by 50 percent, forceps deliveries by 34 percent, and cesarean sections by 45 percent! In a randomized study of 416 women, the average length of labor for the group of 212 women supported by a doula was 7.4 hours. The average length of labor for the 204 women in the unsupported group was 9.4 hours. In a study in a Houston hospital, only 12 percent of the unsupported women had natural, vaginal births (no anesthesia, oxytocin, medication or forceps). In the group of women who had a doula, 55 percent of them delivered naturally. Of the mothers in the Houston study who chose an epidural and did not have a doula, 16.8 percent of them had a cesarean delivery. Of those unsupported who chose narcotic pain relief, 11.6 percent of them had cesarean births. But the mothers who had continuous doula support only had 3.2 percent cesarean deliveries!
Having a doula also appears to affect you even AFTER you give birth! In a doula study conducted in South Africa they learned: Less doula supported mothers considered labor and delivery to have been difficult. The doula supported moms seemed to have more interest in their babies and more interaction with them. There were feeding problems with 63 percent of the non-doula supported moms and only 16 percent of the doula supported moms. At six weeks postpartum, 28 percent of the non-doula babies had experienced vomiting, as compared to 4 percent of the doula supported birth babies. 69 percent non-doula babies had colds or runny nose, compared to 39 percent of the doula babies. 25 percent of the non-doula babies had a poor appetite and none of the doula supported birth babies reported poor appetites. This may be in part because more of the doula supported mothers bonded well with their babies and were successful at breastfeeding. The doula group mothers said it took them an average of 2.9 days to develop a close relationship with their baby, compared to 9.8 days for the other group of mothers. 23 percent of the mothers who had no doula support during birth suffered from postpartum depression. Only 10 percent of the doula support mothers had this experience. The effect of doula support on a mother enhance long-term attachment of the infant to the parents. Two long-standing human practices, early mother-infant contact and having the baby remain with the mother, usually with breastfeeding, and continuous support during labor, have wonderful side effects on maternal behavior. If this was provided for more mothers, we might see a higher percentage of securely attached infants and children. Do yourself and your baby a favor and hire a doula!

What the Postpartum Doula Does

The Postpartum Doula’s basic role is to provide non-intrusive, non-judgmental support according to the family’s needs and wishes. She is there to facilitate your time to settle in, relax, and heal, while assuring that the familiar daily underpinnings of your life and household remain anchored as much as possible. She is there to free you up to do nothing but be with your baby and other family members. She is the peace-of-mind factor.

The Doula may provide help with any or all of the following services: Shopping, cooking, emotional and moral support, breastfeeding, massage (for baby and/or Mom), laundry, answering the telephone and taking messages, fielding visitors, teaching or giving help with baby basics, errands, pet and plant care, help with older siblings, light housekeeping, help with baby so Mom and Dad can have time together to settle into their new roles, and referrals to other sources the mom may need to contact or about. Some Doulas also provide labor support. And although she is not there in a medical capacity, she should also be able to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary in the mother or the baby, and suggest when medical referrals might be in order.

The childbearing year is a time of joy, excitment, and love; yet, there are so many decisions to make! I will help support you in making the choices that are right for your growing family. My goal is to help nurture and empower women to have the type of birth that they want for their baby. I have an unending enthusiasm to provide positive encouragement and support for each member of the childbearing family. I will utilize a wealth of tools from the “doula’s bag of tricks,” learned from other knowledgeable doulas and from laboring moms themselves, in order to support you throught your pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum periods.

Tiffanie Gonzales~ Birth Doula and Breastfeeding Support Staff
I became a doula because I wanted other women to know what a great experience it could be for them. I love mothering women during that time. I want to empower women to know that they have choices during their labor. I will help with birth plans whether it is home births or hospital. I will offer support in whatever setting. I offer kind words, gentle touch, comfort measures, massage, music, photography (if I am not too busy with a mom), counter pressure, and anything that a mom needs.

My Mission:To provide women and families with the tools and support to achieve the birth of their dreams. To help women and their partners understand that they have a choice in all aspects of their care. They make the decisions.

Stacey Gamble~ Birth Doula
I’ve had an intense desire to play an integral part of the birthing experience since I was a little girl. I became pregnant in 2008.  Just like you are doing right now I began to search for options to make my birth experience “my own”. As a result of having an educated midwife, attentive doula and involved husband I experienced an amazing and awe-inspiring home birth. My desire now is to enlighten women to the many resources and options available to them.  Whether you ultimately choose a hospital or home birth, I will guide and inspire you in creating a birth plan that is perfect for you and your baby.  I will offer warm encouragement, unbiased direction and calming reassurance during the exciting but sometimes worrisome weeks of pregnancy.  I will lend my gentle touch, soothing words and diligent guidance during the hours of labor.  I will assist with early postpartum needs so that you may transition into the bonding process as soon as possible with your new family.  My goal is to lend a helping hand in your birth experience and ensure that it will always have a special place in your heart.

Naomi O'Callaghan~  Doula and Childbirth Educator
Birth is a Rite of Passage that in the end not only births a new baby, but births new parents as well. I beleive in the sanctity of the process and believe that every woman through research and introspection can have and erserves an empowering birth. As an educator, my role is to journey with you and help you discover tools that you already have and help you build upon those skills. As a Birth doula, my role is to support your choices regarding your pregnancy and birth plan. Your birth is all about you and your families needs.

Sarah Sorvillo~  Birth Doula
When working with women & having two babies myself, I’ve come to believe a few things about childbirth. The first is that our bodies were exquisitely designed for the task at hand, in labor, during birth and to breastfeed.  The natural course of labor is already perfect, and should be interfered with as little as possible.  How you give birth can greatly effect how you end up parenting. It can effect how well you bond with your child and can greatly effect your decision to breastfeed.  It is important to embrace every type of birth scenario.  Whether it is an unmedicated home birth or a scheduled birth by Cesarean, all women who give birth are mothers.  It is also very important that you educate yourself, are involved in the decision making and that you ultimately are okay with the outcome.

Marcie Webb ~
Birth Doula, Massage Therapist, Hypnotherapist, Fertility Therapist, and HypnoBirthing Educator
Marcie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her practice as a doula. Inspired by the births of her granddaughters not being the kind of birthing experience she thought her daughters deserved, she became a doula to help give her family the best birth experience possible.
Friends and others soon followed and she is thrilled to be a part of many birth experiences both hospital and home births. Being an advocate for mothers, fathers and new little ones during the birthing experience is one of her most favorite things and among her most cherished life experiences.

 Nicole Webb ~ Birth Doula

Nicole has been a DONA (Doulas of North America) trained and Certified Doula since 2007. She is a mom to two beautiful boys. Nicole believes and advocates for women to learn more about their birth options and helps women to feel empowered by their birthing choices and experience.

Postpartum Doulas
Dianne Ceo-Mayor~ Postpartum Doula
There is a great need for support when coming home from the hospital. As a postpartum doula my duties would be to assist with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation, and light household tidying.  Most importantly I would offer emotional and physical recovery from birth. (You need your rest!).  With my experience I can also offer you parent and infant soothing and coping skills. I was also a scout leader so if there are siblings with my scouting experience I can help with their needs too.

Laural Kelly~ Postpartum Doula
I have felt it has been my “calling” to help new mothers transition into the role of motherhood.  I enjoy helping older children to adjust to the changes and joys a sibling brings into the home.  I provide education for breastfeeding, infant care, babywearing and how to care for yourself as a new mother after the birth of your child.

Sheree Edwards~Postpartum Doula
I would love to help you with this incredibly important and precious time in your life. As a mother and grandmother, and I know how essential it is to provide care for a woman as she finds her footing as a new mother. This time is magical, and (let’s be honest) incredibly tiring and the last thing on your mind should be the minutia of every day life. So once your mom goes home and your partner heads back to work, let me make the transition just a little bit easier. I promise to take care of you the same way I have taken care of both my daughters and countless friends as they went through this process; with love, laughter, and lots of home cooking!

What does a Monitrice Do?

What happens at the Open House?

Attending an open house is a great way to learn more details about the Birth Doula Program and how having a Birth Doula attend your birth can be beneficial to you, your partner and your baby.

Generally, we begin each session with an introductory video and presentation, followed by a question and answer session. There is always time during the open house for you to speak individually with the doulas present whether to ask personal questions or go over your labor coping plan.

If you enroll in the Birth Doula Program at an open house, you can take your Prenatal Planning & Information Packet home with you that night.

And of course, all of our clients are welcome to return to any open house to ask more questions, meet more doulas or go over plans again.

What about Postpartum Support?

You may make arrangements with the Birth Doula that came to your birth to meet you at an open house to go over the birth if needed. We strongly recommend attending our Momma’s Milk Circle held each Tuesday from 12:30-3 pm for your first month postpartum. This support group is hosted by a Certified Lactation Counselor or Educator that can answer many questions you may have.  We also host La Leche League meeting at the Center on the third Tuesday each month from 7-9 pm.  After that first month we encourage Mom’s to attend our Momma’s Circle where you will receive support and guidance from other local women in the community. Momma’s Circle is held every Thursday from 11-1 pm.

We also offer private Breastfeeding Services with a Lactation Specialist in home ($100) and at The Center ($50). As well as Postpartum Doulas with packages starting as low as $300.  Postpartum doulas are caregivers who specialize in providing general support to mothers and babies during the immediate postpartum period. Our doulas facilitate the recovery of new mothers by assisting them with a variety of everyday tasks and enabling them to rest as much as possible. Some services the doulas provide are:

• Instruction in baby basics and newborn care
