Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth

We teach natural childbirth and view birth as a natural process – not a medical condition. It is our belief that most women with proper education, preparation, and the help of a loving and supportive coach can be taught to give birth naturally and drug free.

The Bradley Method® is a system of natural labor techniques in which a woman and her coach play an active part in the birth process. It is a simple method of increasing self-awareness, teaching a woman how to deal with the stress of labor by tuning in to her own body. We encourage mothers to trust their bodies using natural breathing, relaxation, good nutrition, exercise, and education.

Our classes also educate and train husbands or partners as pregnancy and labor coaches, or doulas, who take an active role in assisting the pregnant woman through their journey from pregnancy, through labor, and into motherhood. Visit www.fortheloveofmyfamily.org for more information.

Fertility Awareness
Like the earth's surface, a woman of childbearing age moves through cycles of heating and cooling, which in turn create moistening and drying, which in turn provide a fertile environment for life to evolve. Rocks, glaciers, plants and animals (including humans) all evolve in concert with these processes.

Just as a meterologist can observe and measure these cycles in the earth's surface to determine weather patterns, a woman can observe her daily waking temperature, cervical fluid and cervix changes to gauge her gynecological health, and to determine when she can and can't conceive. Charting these signals is called Fertility Awareness (FA).

Charting requires about two to three minutes of daily attention. A woman can use her charts to determine whether or not she's ovulating, if she has progesterone deficiency or a possible thyroid imbalance, if she's pregnant, if she's miscarrying, and more. Used to prevent pregnancy, the method is virtually as effective as The Pill, if its rules are followed. And it's helped countless couples to conceive.

Please note: Fertility Awareness is not the (ineffective) Rhythm Method, which is based on a woman's past cycles. FA determines fertility by daily charting fertility signals in her current cycle. The method is used internationally, and may also be called Natural Family Planning, the Sympto-Thermal Method, The Ovulation Method, or The Billings Method. $40 per couple.

Happiest Baby on the Block
Dr. Karp believes that babies, especially in their first few months of life, can experience "fourth trimester" issues. Babies can have a difficult time getting used to the huge amount of stimuli present in life outside of Mom's body. Their reaction to all of this is to cry and cry.

The Happiest Baby On The Block method formulated by Dr. Harvey Karp, addresses these issues by helping you learn how to effectively recreate the environment of the womb, outside of Mom's body. Once you have learned the steps, you will be able to alleviate some, if not all, of your baby's colic symptoms.

The 5 S's

There are 5 components to this method which, when used together, work amazingly well to calm your crying baby and in many cases help your baby go to sleep with no fuss.

Using cross-cultural techniques combined with his own research, Dr. Karp has developed the "five S's system". Some babies will need all five, others just a few to help induce what he calls the "calming reflex."

  • Swaddling - Tight swaddling provides the continuous touching and support the fetus experienced while still in Mom's womb.

  • Side/stomach position - You place your baby, while holding her, either on her left side to assist in digestion, or on her stomach to provide reassuring support. Once your baby is happily asleep, you can safely put her in her crib, on her back.

  • Shushing Sounds - These sounds imitate the continual whooshing sound made by the blood flowing through arteries near the womb. This white noise can be in the form of a vacuum cleaner, a hair dryer, a fan and so on. The good news is that you can easily save the motors on your household appliances and get a white noise CD which can be played over and over again with no worries.

  • Swinging - Newborns are used to the swinging motions that were present when they were still in Mom's womb. Every step mom took, every movement caused a swinging motion for your baby. After your baby is born, this calming motion, which was so comforting and familiar, is abrubtly taken away. Your baby misses the motion and has a difficult time getting used to it not being there. "It's disorienting and unnatural," says Karp. Rocking, car rides, and other swinging movements all can help.

  • Sucking - "Sucking has its effects deep within the nervous system," notes Karp, "and triggers the calming reflex and releases natural chemicals within the brain." This "S" can be accomplished with breast, bottle, pacifier or even a finger.

These steps sound pretty easy, but seeing them done properly, in conjunction with each other, is the key to relieving your baby's colic symptoms and making Mom, Dad, and baby less stressed and much happier! $65 per couple includes two 2 1/2 classes as well as materials.

HypnoBirthing - The Mongan Method
The HypnoBirthing childbirth method is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing, and stress-free method of birthing. HypnoBirthing classes teach expectant mothers and birth companions the art and joy of experiencing birth in a more comfortable manner. Pregnant mothers-to-be will learn how to call upon their birthing body's own natural relaxant (endorphins) and thus lessen or even eliminate birthing discomfort, labor pain, and the need for medication. When a pregnant woman is properly prepared for childbirth and when mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function during labor and birthing in the same well-designed manner that it does with all other creatures.

HypnoBirthing childbirth classes teach expecting mothers to release all prior programming about birth, how to trust the birthing body and work with it, as well as how to eliminate harmful emotions that lead to pain-causing fear and unyielding muscles during labor and birth. HypnoBirthing teaches the art of using natural birthing instincts and empowers women so they can create the birth they want. HypnoBirthing mothers are conversant and in good spirits while laboring and birthing their baby - totally relaxed, but fully in control. HypnoBirthing moms are aware of their body's contractions but are able to determine the extent to which they feel the birthing surge. HypnoBirthing mothers experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, without fear and tension that causes pain. Their body's natural relaxant replaces the stress hormones that cause labor pain. HypnoBirthing moms are aware of their laboring and birthing body and choose to surrender to the childbirth process. They are aware, in control, and profoundly relaxed.

Vaccines, Let's Talk About

With the numbers of autism skyrocketing, vaccine safety is one of the most pressing topics for parents today.  While there is a tremendous amount of information and opinions out there, not all of them are correct.  This class is designed to give all the information so that a parent can feel they are making an informed choice about vaccinations.  Learn the questions to ask, Nevada state law, alternate schedule options and answers to any other questions you may have.  FREE

Your Vaccination Options
Get your questions addressed about vaccination. There has been an increasing interest over the safety, effectiveness, and necessity of vaccines within the past decade, as well there should be. This is your child's health and life and you want to do what's right for him. Many parents accept what they're told about immunization - safe, effective, necessary, it's the law. But the literature and research on vaccines, and caregivers themselves, often disagree and contradict each other. So what are the real facts?

At this informative seminar, you will gain the tools you need to ask appropriate questions, find credible research, and find out what your options are in order to make a true informed choice for your children. The question of whether or not to vaccinate is not a simple one, but after this class, it will at least be an easier one.

The class will include a 1 hour lecture, 1 hour question and answer, along with an informational vaccination packet.
