Well Rounded Momma’s massage team incorporates a variety of modalities that are used during each session, depending on a person's specific needs. Below you will find a brief overview of some of our techniques.
Prenatal Massage is a form of therapeutic bodywork that is designed to meet the unique needs of the ever-changing pregnant woman. It is performed by comfortably positioning her on her side with the support of pregnancy pillows and draping. Regular massage during pregnancy can help to relieve sciatic pain, reduce stress of weight-bearing joints, ease constipation, gas and heartburn, reduce swelling, aid in longer and deeper sleep, and even improve the outcome of labor and reduce labor pains! While it is a full body massage, focus is spent on the glutes and hips as the body changes to make room for the growing baby. Lymph drainage is also provided for swelling feet.
Postnatal massage is often underestimated. After giving birth there are many changes and adjustments that a new mother's body and mind are navigating. The most important target is to stop muscle derailment. Muscle derailment is a blanket term for the muscle not doing what it is supposed to. This can occur as the body pulls itself back into homeostasis. Some muscles end up pinching, holding, or stretching causing chronic pain such as sciatica. The next target is the neck and shoulders as pain can be intense from holding a new baby and breastfeeding. This massage is performed similar to prenatal with the client on the side with pillows, full bodywork, and focus on glutes and hips.
Fertility massage is specifically designed to relax the body and mind, while also bringing circulation and blood flow to the ovaries and Fallopian tubes. This includes a series of massage techniques that are used to help support reproductive health, the menstrual cycle and fertility. This is not a full body massage. Twenty minutes is focused on neck, shoulders, and décolletage to relax. Another twenty is focused on the abdomen. The last ten is fertility reflexology points on the feet.
DEEP TISSUE/TRIGGER POINT
Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is similar to Swedish massage, but the strokes are slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness and sore shoulders. Trigger points, a.k.a. knots, are contracted tissue points. Trigger point massage focuses and holds pressure on these points until release.
Reiki uses a technique commonly called palm or hands on healing. Through the use of this technique, practitioners transfer universal energy (a.k.a. Reiki) in the form of Qi through the palms to the client. Qi flows through them to areas needed, aligning and cleansing Chakras, and then grounding. This is believed to allow for self-healing and a state of equilibrium. This is energy work, not a massage. First time sessions recommend an hour.
CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY
Cranial Sacral Therapy helps the central nervous system by gently manipulating the cranial membrane and cerebral spinal fluid circulation from skull to sacrum. This technique can be used to help a wide range of issues (most common being cancer and migraines), but is sought out for its non-invasiveness. Those uncomfortable with touch, or unable to handle pressure, seek this technique. This is not a massage. It is gentle hand holds around the head, shoulders, spine, abdomen, sacrum and feet and is performed fully clothed. **Not recommended for prenatal clients as therapy is performed entirely with the client on their back**
Medical Massage incorporates many techniques to address muscle and skeletal issues diagnosed by a doctor. Ex Fibromyalgia
This technique uses Trigger Point and flushing strokes on the shoulders and neck, followed by the gentle and relaxing holds of Cranial Sacral Therapy, to reduce the frequency of headaches and migraines. This massage is performed from head to shoulders only. **Warning for prenatal clients. Client will need to be on their back for a half hour in hour long sessions**
Reflexology uses specific pressure points on the feet to help correct energy flows throughout your body. It is thought that these specific areas have corresponding points on the physical body and can help ailments as well as spiritual blockages. Recommended as an hour or half hour session.
Cupping is a suction technique using a cup-like device to pull up the skin from the muscle which can free the membrane (a.k.a fascia), increase blood flow, release inflammation, calm Triggers (a.k.a knots), and kick start the body’s natural healing process. It is famously known for leaving the dark purple circular bruises seen on athletes. Dynamic cupping is the less traditional technique of using oil and constant movement with the cups, and is less likely to leave markings. Dynamic cupping is recommended for scars and stretch marks and is available upon request. ** Add on only unless special request is made**
